Must Read on IL Budget

Henry Kissinger once famously remarked that, “ninety percent of all politicians give the other ten percent a bad reputation.” Perhaps the notion can specifically apply to irresponsible Illinois state lawmakers, who have earned a well-deserved reputation of irresponsibly crafting state budgets “filled with gimmicks, constructed for years on promises for which there were no revenues, and sustained by borrowing of the type that would make even a loan shark blush…” Those are not our words, but Manhattan Institute senior fellow, and RealClearMarkets.com columnist, Steven Malanga’s.

While we at Patriots United usually resist the hackneyed term “must read,” we break it out for Malanga’s recent column entitled Illinois' Budget: From Worst to 'Worster,’ which appeared this past week before a national audience. Malanga wittily provides the backdrop for the troubling big-picture outlook from Springfield. As you read it and soak in the operative facts and figures, remember that neither the author nor the vast majority of his audience are Illinoisans. This is the view presented to America of our state leaders.

I will add, as a fifth circumstance in the situation of the House of Representatives, restraining them from oppressive measures, that they can make no law which will not have its full operation on themselves and their friends, as well as on the great mass of the society. This has always been deemed one of the strongest bonds by which human policy can connect the rulers and the people together.
